HEAL · AGC Tenwek Hospital
Neurosurgical Care for Patients in Need
Launched February 2020
About this Project
The AGC Tenwek Hospital Neurosurgery Department serves as a referral center for a vast region of Kenya and neighboring countries. Every day, the team cares for some of the most vulnerable members of their communities — newborn babies born with hydrocephalus and spina bifida, children with brain tumors, mothers and fathers suffering traumatic brain trauma, young adults with vascular diseases of the brain, and patients living with disabling conditions requiring complex spine surgery.
For many of these patients, the diagnosis is devastating. Their families often travel hundreds of kilometers seeking help, only to discover that life-saving neurosurgical care is beyond their financial means. Too often, they are forced to choose between selling everything they own or watching a loved one suffer without treatment.
Through the Tenwek Neurosurgery HEAL Account, Faith Aid helps remove those financial barriers — ensuring that no child is denied a chance to live, no trauma victim is abandoned because of poverty, and no family loses hope simply because they cannot afford the care they desperately need.

Patient Spotlight
When Shantel was born in April 2023 with spina bifida, her mother Sharon had no way of knowing. There had been no ultrasound. The doctors at their local hospital in rural Kenya explained that Shantel needed specialized care at Tenwek — but Sharon and her husband, who lives with epilepsy and cannot work, had nothing.
For months, Sharon sold firewood, leaned on her church, and finally asked her brother to sell livestock just to fund the journey. When she arrived at Tenwek's neuro clinic — her baby hungry, her clothes soiled, and every shilling spent — the Faith Aid team was called.
They prayed with her, brought her to Mustard Seed House, and covered Shantel's surgery through the Faith Aid Neurosurgery Compassion Fund. Two weeks later, the call came: the operating theatre was ready. Shantel's surgery was a success.
As Sharon climbed into the car to go home, she cradled her daughter and whispered "thank you" over and over again — through tears, in Kipsigis.
"For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." — Matthew 17:20

Funds in HEAL Accounts can only be spent on behalf of impoverished patients.
100% of funds donated goes to the project — Faith Aid (US) does not take any percentage for administration.
All beneficiaries must undergo a robust assessment by our case coordinators.
All beneficiaries must give sacrificially toward their own care — our case coordinators work with patients and their families to determine what that means.
Faith Aid has a grant agreement with Tenwek Hospital that pays for medical care on behalf of impoverished patients.
Faith Aid's stewardship of funds on behalf of impoverished patients is recognized as the gold standard in accountability and best-practices.

“
A child who would never have learned to walk now runs and plays. A father injured in a road accident returns to provide for his family. A mother with a brain tumor is given more years to raise her children. These stories are only possible because compassionate believers chose to give.
“As a department at AGC Tenwek hospital, we serve daily patients from the vast Southrift region and beyond, with life-saving neurosurgical care. Many face critical conditions and hope that the care will be there when they need it most. However, limited resources and inadequate equipment can stand in their way of having a second chance in life. Your generosity provides compassionate care to the most vulnerable. Regardless of the amount, every gift brings hope, eases suffering and helps save lives. Together, we can give patients a chance to heal, recover and return to their families all for the glory of God. Thanks for making a difference.”
