Ruby requires surgery to correct a condition where the bones of her skull do not close completely.
Ruby’s grandmother noticed what appeared to be a growth between Ruby’s eyes when she was only one month old. Ruby’s parents were referred to a specialty hospital, but could not go due to lack of funds. Thankfully, Ruby was identified by a nurse in her village who contacted Under Five.
Under Five brought Ruby to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a rare condition called Frontal Nasal Encephaloceles. Usually, children suffering from this condition receive treatment within the first few months of life. Left untreated, encephaloceles could result in permanent brain damage, vision loss, or death. The good news is that children with front-type encephalocele are much more likely to survive than those who have an encephalocele on the back of the head.
Raising $1,400 will allow us to schedule Ruby’s surgery and cover the cost of her treatment. Will you make a gift today to provide life saving surgery for Ruby?
Questions & Answers
Can you tell me more about your organization?
Faith Aid & Development moves mountains for vulnerable children in Africa. Our organization is founded on Christ’s promise, that “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move” (Matthew 17:20). Our vision is a world where no child dies from treatable conditions.
What is Under Five?
Under Five saves the lives of African children suffering from preventable or treatable conditions. Across Kenya, community health workers, pastors, churches, hospitals, and organizations refer the most desperate children and families to Under Five.
What does the “Under Five” name mean?
Across the world, the under-five mortality rate measures the probability of dying between birth and 5 years of age. While much progress has been made globally to reduce under-five mortality rates, the highest rates of child mortality are still in Sub-Saharan Africa where 1 in 9 children dies before age five. Children under five are among the most vulnerable and voiceless in society. Under Five focuses on child survival and treatment for African children 5 years of age and younger.
How will Under Five help Ruby?
Under Five will support Ruby and her mother with access to care and treatment. Gifts from this campaign will cover costs associated with Ruby’s transportation, hospital stay, surgery, and recovery.
Is your team on the ground in Kenya with Ruby?
Yes. Under Five has a team in Kenya. Our team identifies, investigates, and builds a personal relationship with all children and families we serve.
